Lake Tahoe Fire Threatens Water Clarity

We have all seen the damage to property and homes on TV the past few days resulting from the fire at Lake Tahoe.  What may not be so obvious is the potential damage the lake that will no doubt result from this event.

There is a considerable amount of ash being deposited in the lake at this point, transfering nutrients from the land to the waters.  When the burned out areas are subject to precipitation, the silt load coming into the lake may dramatically increas as well.  Vegetative cover in any watershed is a key to protecting the downstream waters,  in this case it is burning up.
